Thank you Johannes for quoting from Max Grunwald. His article "Mattersdorf, in: Jahrbuch für Jüdische Volkskunde 1924/25" is considered an authority about Mattersdorf (or as you say: müsste eigentlich “Die Wahrheit” sein?). You say that Grunwald is many times ambiguous. I agree.
Shall give here only one example. When I looked at the customs of the Mattersdorf community I came to Simchas Tora.
What does Grunwald mean by "Musik"? It surely could not have been played by instruments (on YOMTEV יום טוב). If he means "singing" then he would have used "Gesang" and not "Musik". If we continue, he says that the procession had youth with torches and children with burning candles. This seems strange, as the houses in Mattersdorf were built mostly of wood. Fires were common. If fire broke out how would they extinguish it on YOMTEV? Once the procession reached the Rabbi's house what would they do with the torches and burning candles? They could not extinguish them on יום טוב.
I know that also members of the Chrisliche Gemeinde took part in the שמחת תורה procession. Where they responsible to extinguish the torches and the candles? Did they play the music? Grunwald does not say anything about that. He does not mention SHABBES GOYs.

Rabbi Mayer Schischa is the brother of my great-great-great-grandfather David Loewy. The family can be traced back to the 1600s in Mattersdorf.
