In the painting of the Regensburg Bible we see just nine sons of Haman hanging. The tenth son is just being prepared to be hung, with the henchman at his back putting the rope around his neck.

The son seems still alive standing on his feet, and not dead as described in MEGILAT ESTER.

I wonder who the henchman was. Was he employed by the King? Or was he just a civil servant? As they were already dead at the hanging, it might have been the Coroner. The Megila does not elaborate on that.

Dear Johannes,

Thank you for the article about PURIM.

You mention that the hanging of Haman's sons is written two chapters after the hanging of Haman himself. Let us see what happened.
As we know from the MEGILAT ESTER, Haman was taken to the gallows and hanged on the second wine drinking feast that Ester arranged for the King and Haman.

The proclamations signed and sealed by the king's ring

There were two sets of proclamations issued for the 13th ADAR.
The first written by Haman ordering the killing of all the Jews of the kingdom;
The second was written by Mordechai to the Jews ordering them to stand up against their attackers and take revenge on their enemies.

On the 13th ADAR both orders signed by the king were in force (any order sealed by the king's ring cannot be cancelled). A battle broke up on that day between the two groups. In that battle, amongst the dead were also Haman's ten sons, and Ester asked the king that they should be hanged the following day.

As we can see a few months elapsed from the hanging of Haman to the hanging of his sons.
Haman was taken to the gallows alive. His sons were killed in the battle, and their corpses were hanged.

Keep up your good work. We would like to see some progress also on the Mattersburg/dorf cemetery project.
