There is one more mention of a Schulkopfer that I came across in my research. In 1647, two thieves from Lackenbach named Redencic and Boriceviv savagely attacked a Jewish peddler from Mattersdorf on the road with a hatchet. They wounded him severely and stole his money (one gold Ducat, one Reichsthaler, and 32 Kreuzer) and his goods (a small silver jug, silver spoon, mirror, gold ring, three geese, and two capons). The peddler’s name was not recorded but it was noted that he was the Schulklopfer in the community. So he was well known to all the Mattersdorf Jews as he awakened them each morning by hammering on their doors. The robbers were caught and sentenced to be “broken on the wheel,” a particularly brutal form of public execution. I would love to know the name of this Schulklopfer. Sources: 1.
