He was a collector of a certain tax, He took the community leaders to court, therefore he was punished that he couldn’t have any position in the community for 10 years, this ruling was agreed by Rabbi Bunem Gins

R’ Mendel F”K [Deutsch] was criticizes by the community, it appears on protocol year 1820 in the community ledger signed by R’ Bunem Ginz Schlessinger chief rabbi of Matersdorf, ironically R’ Bunem’s son Akiva Gins Schlessinger married the daughter of R’ Mendel F”K Deutsch after R’ Bunems death
The protocol is printed in monthly periodical מוריה, אדר תש”מ, and also חידושי רבי בונם איגר, ניו יורק תש”ע, מכתב ט’, עמ’ תקי”ב

Menachem Mandl Deutsch, had a contemporary of another Menachem Mandl Deutsch, one from my grandmothr’s side (F”K) and one from my grandfather’s side (Sofer). Both Mandl’s appear in the Hungarian Census of 1828 for Nagymarton [Mattersdorf in Hungarian]. There is an interesting document in the Sopron Archives:
“Am 19. Mai 1817 borgt sich das Ehepar Deutsch von Albin Pfaller, Ehrenburger der Stadt Wr. Neustadt, ein Kapital von 21.700 fl. Wiener Wahrung zur eine Verzinsung von 5% und einer Kundigungszeit von 6 monaten aus. Um sich genugend abzusichern, liess Pfaller die Schuldverschreibung des Mandl Deutsch, des Simon Deutsch und Lowy Hirschel beim Verwaltungamt in Forchtenstein am 27. Mai 1817 durch dem Verwalter Fuchs eintragen (Hans Paul, 50 Jahre Stadtgemeinde Mattersburg, [Mattersburg 1976] page 189). The sum of 21.700 fl. is a huge sum. I do not know for what purpose was the loan taken, and which of the two Mandl Deutsch and wife took the loan, as the wife’s name is not mentioned. Mandl Deutsch from my grandmother’s side had a brother named Simon Zvi Hirsh Deutsch, and it was probably he who signed as guarantor to the bill.”*

Yitzchok Stroh translated the inscription over the phone to me. Transcription errors are mine.

He is the ha-Torani (esteemed Torah scholar) and extremely exalted ha Rav (learned) Menachem Mendel the son of Meir P’K Z’L
His soul departed on the eve of Thursday [Wednesday night] 23 Shevat
He was buried on Thursday of the year 5609.
[In the star the abbreviation stands for] He is buried.
From the day he matured, he did good, complete works
His soul desired and he did. (He accomplished what he set out to do.)
In truth and in faithfulness, grace and kindness.
And he did for those who go in faith.
For his good deeds the faithful G-d will reward him.

Thanks for the wonderful work. It is greatly apreciated by all of those interested in Jewish history, and especialy by those interested in Burgenland.
I think the word מאור is mistranscribed and it should be MEOD. Instead of “erhabene Leuchte” “exalted light” it should be translated “extremely exalted.”

This is my fourth-great-grandfather. He and his wife Ginendal had at least eight children who reached adulthood:
1. Gottlieb Deutsch
2. Ignatz (Isak) Deutsch
3. Netty (Esther) Deutsch who married Moritz (Moshe Elya) Breuer
4.Betty (Beila) Deutsch who married Rabbi Jakob Akiva Gins Schlessinger, son of Rabbi Simcha Bunim Gins (Eger)
5. Moritz (Meyer) Deutsch
6.Jakob Samuel Deutsch
7. Sabine (Shvartzl) Deutsch who married David Breuer
8.Fani (Fradel) Deutsch who married Israel Koppel

This family suffered tremendous losses in the Holocaust but still there are descendants alive today, living in Israel, England, Australia, the USA, Argentina, Austria, and Switzerland.
